December 12 Packs Savannah's Holiday Season Into One Saturday. The Clock Sorts It Out.

The day starts at 8 a.m. at Hotel Bardo on Drayton Street, where wristband pickup opens for the Downtown Neighborhood Association's 51st Holiday Tour of Homes & Inns. It ends around 9 p.m. at the Lucas Theatre, after the last bow of a SCAD Holiday Spectacular performance. In between, on Saturday, December 12, 2026, Savannah also has the Santa Train on Louisville Road, free dance and music on the west end of River Street, and the 34th Annual Lighted Christmas Street Parade.

That list looks like a pileup. Lay the events out by hour and location, though, and they mostly line up one after another. The day moves from the southern squares to the west side, then down to the river, then back into downtown. Only one hour on the calendar forces a real choice.

The Saturday, Hour by Hour

7 p.m. SCAD's Holiday Spectacular Lucas Theatre for the Arts, 32 Abercorn St. $35 to $75

The table pulls from each organizer's own listing. Read the rows in order and two features of the day show up. The daytime events sit in different parts of town, so they don't compete for the same sidewalks. The evening events share downtown, but they fall one after the other in time.

Morning Belongs to Whitefield and Taylor Squares

This year's tour follows a new east-to-west route through the southern expansion of the Historic District. The route marks the 175th anniversary of Whitefield and Taylor Squares. For anyone who lives downtown, that puts the biggest daytime crowd of the Saturday on the south end of the district, well away from the river.

The ticket structure matters more than the route. According to the DNA's Eventbrite listing, general admission costs $85 for either a morning session from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. or an afternoon session from noon to 5 p.m. A limited number of new All Day Tour Passes sell for $110. VIP tickets cost $125 and add a private tour of the Mercer Williams House Museum, the former home of Jim Williams, who organized the first Holiday Tour of Homes. The VIP tours run at 9, 9:30 and 10 a.m., with space for 25 guests at each time.

Afternoon ticket holders should note one detail. The session runs until 5 p.m., but wristband pickup at Hotel Bardo closes at 1 p.m. Every participant needs the color-coded wristband to get into tour properties. Anyone planning to start at 3 p.m. still has to stop by Drayton Street before 1.

The listing sets out a few more rules that shape the day:

  • Tickets are non-refundable, and there is no wait list.
  • The tour admits guests ages 12 and older, with no exceptions on tour day.
  • It is mainly a walking tour, and many properties have stairs.
  • Trolley shuttle tickets are sold separately. The trolley runs between Tour Headquarters and central tour stops, not to each home's door.

The age rule is the reason the next stop exists as an option.

The West Side Runs a Parallel Track

From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Coastal Heritage Society holds the Savannah Santa Train at the Georgia State Railroad Museum and Savannah Children's Museum, 655 Louisville Road. The CHS page lists train and handcar rides, Santa photos, crafts, multicultural holiday activities and live entertainment. Its hours almost exactly match the tour's morning session, in a different part of downtown. A household can split up at breakfast and meet again by mid-afternoon without either group passing through the other's crowd.

As of early October, CHS says Santa Train tickets will go on sale soon. The page doesn't yet list a price or an on-sale date.

Down the hill, the free Christmas on the River Dance & Musical Performances run from noon to 4:30 p.m. at MLK Park inside the Plant Riverside District, 400 W. River St. The Savannah Christmas Market runs at Plant Riverside all season, open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily with free entry. That makes the west end of River Street the place where the afternoon crowds gather before the parade.

4:30 to 7 p.m.: The River Becomes the Starting Line

The stage performances wrap up at 4:30. One hour later, at 5:30, the Lighted Christmas Street Parade leaves from the same place. Savannah's Waterfront says the parade starts at Plant Riverside on the west end of River Street, heads to the East Broad Ramp, and then winds through downtown along Bay, Lincoln, Broughton and Jefferson Streets. Admission is free. Every entry must be completely covered in Christmas lights, and entries close Thursday, November 19, 2026.

The route explains the day's flow. The parade starts where the afternoon crowd already is, runs the length of River Street, and then climbs into the downtown grid. People who spent the afternoon at the market or the MLK Park stage are already at the start. Tour-goers who finish at 5 p.m. in the southern squares can head north toward Broughton or Bay and watch from the downtown section of the route.

As of this writing, the Waterfront Association's parade page lists the route but no 2026 road-closure or parking plan. Downtown residents who need to move a car that evening should check the city's notices as the date gets closer.

7 p.m. Is the One Real Collision

The parade is scheduled to end at 7 p.m. That is the same minute SCAD's Holiday Spectacular, featuring Broadway stars and the SCAD Bee Sharps, begins its Saturday performance at the Lucas Theatre, 32 Abercorn St. No one can see the whole parade and also make the curtain. The rest of the Saturday allows some combining. This hour does not.

The show runs three dates, and the other two avoid the Saturday crush:

  1. Friday, December 11, 7 p.m. The free waterfront performances run 5 to 7:30 p.m. that evening, so the two events overlap for half an hour.
  2. Saturday, December 12, 7 p.m. This date competes directly with the end of the parade.
  3. Sunday, December 13, 3 p.m. The only matinee, the day after everything else.

Seats are reserved and cost $35 to $75. SCAD lists a 20% discount for seniors, students and military, and 30% for SCAD Card holders. Locals who want to see both the parade and the show can book Sunday and avoid the Saturday conflict.

The Saturday Sits Inside a Longer Season

December 12 is the busiest day, but Visit Savannah's holiday calendar lists Christmas on the River from November 19, 2026, through January 3, 2027. The Savannah Christmas Market at Plant Riverside covers the same dates. Organizers describe vendor stalls, a Festival of Trees, a gingerbread display and Santa visits, and they say the market draws more than 250,000 visitors. Paid public parking and valet are available nearby.

Two other dates follow a similar but smaller pattern:

  • Saturday, November 28. The Holiday Kickoff at The Park at Eastern Wharf, 201 Port St., runs 5 to 9 p.m., with a tree lighting, Santa, food trucks and entertainment. The 25th Savannah Lighted Boat Parade runs 7 to 9 p.m. More than 30 lit boats, led by the Georgia Queen, make two loops between Eastern Wharf and the Talmadge Bridge. Suggested viewing spots include Eastern Wharf, Plant Riverside, Rousakis Riverfront Plaza and the riverwalk. Viewing is free.
  • Saturday, December 5. The Savannah Philharmonic's Holiday Pops plays the Lucas Theatre at 7:30 p.m., with a 3 p.m. matinee as well.

The season closes on the river. The waterfront's New Year's Eve fireworks are listed from 11:59 p.m. on December 31 to 12:09 a.m. on January 1, 2027. The show is fired from a barge and can be seen from Rousakis Riverfront Plaza, Plant Riverside District, Eastern Wharf and downtown rooftop bars.

Organizers had not posted 2026 dates for a City Hall tree lighting or a Telfair holiday tree event as of early October. Neither appears on this calendar until they do.

If a morning walking the Whitefield and Taylor Square homes leaves you wondering what your own place downtown would be worth, Homes by TLC can run the numbers. A free home valuation takes a few minutes to request, and you can do it from the sofa after the parade.
